Give back this holiday season. Not only can you change a life, you can possibly advance your career. Studies have shown that doing good for others can actually lead to something even better for yourself in return. In a recent article published on Forbes.com, a study by the Corporation for National and Community Service, tracked more than 70,000 unemployed people for 10 years and found that those who volunteered had a 27% better chance of finding a job than those who did not. No other known job-search strategy can boost your chances of getting a job by nearly 30 percent.

Why?

According to the study, employers saw volunteers as those who are willing to volunteer demonstrated higher levels of capacity than those who did not. In 2013, a separate study of hiring managers across the United States found that 73 percent said that nonprofit experience is important. Candidates with volunteer experience bring something extra to the table. They are more attractive, more productive, and more motivated. Volunteering also gives you a foot in the door to know about upcoming positions within the company, and gives you an education on aspects of the industry you are interested in.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to fill a gap in your resume. If you are unable to find or hold a regular job at the time, volunteering not only shows work ethic, but also can give you new skills that can help your future job search.

If you are not sure where your future lies, volunteering is a great way to explore a new career field. Get a sneak peek into different careers by volunteering your time and getting an inside look at the career possibilities.

How?

First, find a nonprofit that aligns with your goals. If you are looking for a career in the medical field, volunteer at the local hospital or clinic. Search online or talk to people you know to find out where there is a need and how you might be able to help.

Treat your volunteer work as if your career depended on it.  Embrace the opportunity to serve, and bring energy and enthusiasm every day. Work hard to actually make a difference. Pitch in before you are asked and always offer a lending hand. You will quickly gain a reputation as a hard-worker and you never know who might be watching.

Instead of serving silently, engage in conversation with anyone and everyone. Get to know the board members, the other volunteers, and the directors of the nonprofit. Tell them about yourself, your goals, and your education. When a job opening comes up, they might just remember your name first.
