Questions can make or break an interview. Asking questions shows the interviewer you were listening while they were talking, shows your interest in the job or company, and helps you decide if it’s where you really want to work.

“So, do you have any questions for us?”

At this point the interview is winding down, you’ve been in there for over an hour, you’re reviewing everything you’ve said hoping that you didn’t screw up your chances and now racking your brain for some intelligent question you can raise that will show your intellect and interest, but nothing comes to mind.

“No, I don’t have any questions.”

Wrong answer!

An interview is a two-way street. Regardless of how desperate you might be to get the job, use the interview as your opportunity to ease your mind and quench your curiosity. By asking a few thought-provoking questions, you gain valuable information about the company and position, but also distinguish yourself among the sea of candidates who left the interview without continuing the discussion.

You don’t want to take up the entire afternoon drilling the employer about benefits, perks, and a complete company history, but three or four questions shows your interest, gives you the opportunity to evaluate whether the company fits your own values, and gives you the opportunity to clear up any gray areas about yourself or your history.

Here are a few of the best interview questions, and why.

Q: Has this position evolved over the years? 

Why? If the position has grown and changed since its original job description, that gives you an indication that the company has also developed significantly since then. If it is the same job it was 10 years ago, it might not give you much opportunity for growth.

Q: What are some of the largest company concerns at this time, and how could I contribute?

Why: This shows you are a team player and ready to help, but it also gives you insight into the current company culture, issues, and problems you may face.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working here?

Why? This can give you valuable insight into the company culture, benefits, and opportunity for personal success.

Q: Can you tell me about the team, coworkers, and manager I would be working with?

Why: This tells you about the atmosphere of the position. Are you the new one among a team of veterans, has your manager been at the company long, is it more dictatorship or collaboration?

Q: What are the biggest challenges of this position?

Why? This may tell you why the position is open, and may give you a heads up as to what lies ahead of you. You may learn that you’ll be asked to work weekends, or your demands will be higher than expected.

Q: What are the company plans for growth?

Why: This tells you whether you’re in for a dead-end job or whether the company may provide you with opportunities to build your career.

Q: Do you have any hesitations about me or my credentials?

Why? This is a bold question, but it is a great interview ender because it shows confidence and indicates you are open to discussing your shortcomings. This also gives you one last chance to “seal the deal” before leaving the room.
