A personal marketing plan can take a typical job search and put it on steroids. Those who have taken the time to develop a personal marketing plan have a strategy to get themselves noticed and wanted by employers and recruiters. A personal marketing plan is an outline of what you want to accomplish and how you are going to get there. Creating an effective plan takes time to get to know yourself, and what makes you different from everyone else. This unique brand becomes your gateway to land your dream job.

Once you have created your own personal marketing plan, you can use it to promote yourself, find opportunities that fit your needs, and build your network. Think of your plan as a dating profile for your professional life. You can use it to build an impressive Linked In profile, and promote your goals on social media. Share relevant content with people in your networks and position yourself for companies you would like to work for.

The Plan

  1. Personal Mission Statement

Your personal mission statement defines who you are and what you need to do. It should also include qualities you believe set yourself apart from the rest. It can be a bit of mantra for where you are and where you want to be.

  1. Current Situation Analysis

This is an in-depth look at your strengths and weaknesses by examining your past experience. It may be beneficial to have a third party, mentor, or even a good friend talk this through with you to give you a more objective perspective. This is something that should be re-evaluated every six months, depending on your situation.

  1. Goals

Chances are, you already have an idea of what type of job you want. Nevertheless, it is important to determine what job fits your needs, what environment you excel in, what industries you enjoy, and what is important to you in a company culture. This helps you to narrow your job search and find a position that can give you more than a paycheck.

  1. Market Yourself with Ads

Use Facebook or Google Ads to your advantage. Use your website, resume, or blog as a landing page and then display your resume directly through advertising. This allows your resume to pop up on potential employers’ news feed.

  1. Blogging

Blogging is the most time consuming form of social media, but it might be the most effective. A blog establishes credibility, and allows others to see your personality and knowledge of the subject or industry. Blog are especially helpful in areas of creativity such as art, writing, graphic or web design, and photography. Reading, commenting, and following other blogs helps to enhance your web presence.

  1. YouTube

Creating a video resume is a great way to land an interview. If you are interested in creating a video resume, take the time to make sure it is short, professional, and engaging. Research other video resumes and it is easy to see which ones are successful, and which ones are not.

In today’s job market, you need to use every tool you can get your hands on to beat out other candidates.

Effective personal branding gives you the confidence and direction you need to get the job you want and put you on a career path that leads to ultimate success.
